Queer & Christian: An Afternoon of Celebration with Revd Brandan Robertson

Last weekend, we were delighted to gather at Newcastle Cathedral for Queer & Christian: An Afternoon with Revd Brandan Robertson — a beautiful time of conversation, reflection, and celebration rooted in God’s abundant love for all people. The Cathedral’s warm hospitality, the wisdom and insight of our Patron Revd Brandan Robertson, and the uplifting voices of the Northern Proud Voices choir created a truly memorable afternoon.

Brandan led us through a powerful exploration of the intersection between queer identity and Christian faith, offering both theological depth and heartfelt encouragement for all who continue to seek spaces of affirmation within the Church. His message resonated deeply, reminding us once again that God has made LGBT+ people beautifully and wonderfully in God’s own image — a Gospel truth that brings hope, joy, and transformation.

Guests were also invited to engage in an open audience Q&A, creating space for honest conversation and shared stories. The Northern Proud Voices choir filled the Cathedral with vibrant music, adding yet another layer of warmth and celebration to a crisp autumn day. Together, we witnessed what can happen when communities intentionally nurture belonging and make room for every person to be received with dignity and care.

Revd Luke Dowding, our CEO, reflected on the significance of moments like this:
“It continues to be so significant for churches to display their commitment to affirming and loving LGBT+ people — even more so in the Church of England currently. That’s why it’s so powerful when dioceses such as Newcastle show up and demonstrate they mean what they say, nurturing spaces where all are received with abundant care and hospitality. Thank you to Newcastle Cathedral, who opened their doors to host our Patron Brandan Robertson and the fabulous Northern Proud Voices. On a cold and dreary Autumnal afternoon, the warmth expressed in the words Brandan shared and in the delightful musical talent from NPV ensured another spark of God’s Kingdom was lit and warmed our hearts and souls.”

As always, events like this are a team effort — and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make the afternoon so meaningful. Thank you especially to Fr. Lee for his hard work and dedication.

We left feeling encouraged, energised, and reminded once again that the Church is at its best when it celebrates the fullness of God’s diverse and beautiful creation.
