Queer and Green Retreat

Queer and Green Retreat

A day retreat exploring the interrelationship between our queer lives and our connection with the natural world.

This event is jointly organised by OneBodyOneFaith, Open Table Network, and Modern Church.

Join us for a day of prayer, contemplation, conversation and creativity, with input from Neil Whitehouse and Ruth Harley.

Our planet trembles with vulnerability - exploited by humanity and adapting to survive. As queer people of faith, we are acutely aware of the need to live in ways that honour diversity, reconnect what has been disconnected, and to live in our bodies. Our heritage is of breaking down boxes and binaries, transgressing boundaries, and looking death and decay squarely in the face. We are a people of resistance and integrity, constantly working for a more habitable world. This retreat will explore how all this relates to our call to be agents of healing and solidarity for the planet.

Ruth Harley is a theologian and a priest in the Church of England. She is currently working on a PhD which explores how women's narratives of vocation can challenge and expand our understanding of the church as the Body of Christ. She is interested in exploring ways of reading the church, the world, and the presence of God in both, which account for and value as gift the diversity of created life, both human and non-human. She is the co-author of Being Interrupted: reimagining the church's mission from the outside in (SCM Press, 2020), and a contributor to Amazing Love: theologies for understanding discipleship, sexuality and mission (ed. Andrew Davison, DLT, 2016).

Neil Whitehouse is a minister, zoology graduate, massage therapist, and gay. He trained as a Methodist minister, worked in central London for twelve years and moved to Montreal in 2001, joining the United Church of Canada. He is on the Advisory Board of Montreal Green Coalition and speaks up for nature at city halls and churches. He is an innovator, a visionary, and author of The Gospel of Jesus Green (Wipf and Stock, 2024).

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
